  War of Independence results in Anglo Irish Treaty and independence from Britain for 26 counties of Ireland.

  The Queen’s Bridge is renamed Queen Maeve Bridge as a new national identity is forged for Ireland.

  June, Liam Mellows enters the Four Courts, Dublin, fighting on the Anti Treaty side of the Civil War which had just begun. He is captured, imprisoned in Mountjoy Jail and executed in December

• 1923

  May, The Irish Civil War ends in victory for the Free State forces who supported the Anglo Irish Treaty.

• 1942

  The bridge is, once more, renamed and is now Mellows Bridge.
